Everything in nature follows a predictable cycle — seeds being planted, eggs being fertilized, the moon, the seasons — no matter how big or how small, this rhythm is within all of life here on earth. Your body is no exception. The menstrual cycle is a fractal of this cyclical rhythm, and it has a consistent, predictable ebb and flow which applies to every woman on earth. There is a very precise baseline of normal for the menstrual cycle, and any variations of this normal are clear indications of dis-ease and conflict. These variations are not bad, or dangerous, or invasive — they are adaptive processes being initiated by your brilliant body to help you cope with stress.

Let me repeat that in other terms — your symptoms are here to serve you. It sounds too simple and straightforward to be true because we have been raised to believe that our cycles are random and that our bodies are deeply flawed. But imagine, for just a moment, that your body was brilliantly designed with the same beauty and accuracy as each tiny spiraling shell on the seashore, and each blooming flower in the midst of spring… Imagine that your body was designed with the same predictability and unstoppable force as the earthly seasons… And imagine that this design has a map which has drawn upon it the home of the female body in her optimal functioning, with her clearly defined shorelines and her boundaries, as well as the many winding paths and rivers she is prone to meander which may cause her cycle to drift out of balance.

In my practice, these meanderings manifest as physical symptoms, recurring thoughts, and dreams — all of which are messages from your body and your psyche, and they are what we can use to help you navigate your way back home.

You are not broken. The fact that your body is offering you these messages is PROOF that everything is working exactly as designed. And if you learn how to use your symptoms as a navigation tool you will find your way back to your own shore — back to your balanced, fertile, feminine self.

How to navigate your way back home

One of the most effective ways of reaching resolution that I have found is quite simple — talking openly about our struggles and our perceptions in a space where we feel understood and accepted. If we are honest with ourselves and are willing to speak our most intimate of experiences and feelings out loud, we can break free from the isolation that comes with holding in our pain. Sometimes we don’t even realize what we are holding in — we have become so good at neglecting our intuition and putting our desires in the backseat, that we don’t see the continual conflict and stress that we have become entangled within. As you speak out loud in a space of deep reflection, these entanglements become easier to see.

This framework works, but it requires vulnerability and self-responsibility. It works for the woman who is no longer interested in blaming others for her problems or outsourcing her health care. It works for the woman who is ready to lean into the wisdom of her body and to trust that she was designed to adapt, heal and survive. Sometimes this work can be confronting. Know that no one here is judging you, except yourself.
